Defend Blue Slip Option to Protect Judicial Appointment Process

The so-called Blue Slip option enables Senators to block nominations for federal judgeships within their home states by withholding the “Blue Slips” signaling their approval. This process was put in place to ensure judges nominated by the president are reasonable and well-suited to the state where they would serve, and both parties have long defended this having this capability.

Earlier in November, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) signaled that he will disregard the Blue Slip option and announced a confirmation hearing for two appellate court nominees, David Stras and Kyle Duncan, whose Blue Slips were withheld by Senators Al Franken (D-MN) and John Kennedy (R-LA). The Trump administration has already put forth a long slate of highly partisan and unqualified nominees whose appointments will greatly alter the makeup of our court system. Eliminating the Blue Slip option, a crucial system of checks and balances, will leave our judicial system vulnerable to lifetime appointments of extremist judges for decades.

Call this office:

Dianne Feinstein D-CA

Why you’re calling this office:

This is one of your two Senators.

Your script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from San Francisco.

I’m calling today to ask [REP/SEN NAME] to demand that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley respect the Blue Slip option and not initiate confirmation hearings for any nominee that has not been approved by his or her home state Senators. Approving appropriate nominees to these lifetime appointments is essential, and disrupting the Blue Slip option is an unacceptable attack on our systems of check and balances.

Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.
