Demand a Town Hall this Week

The House of Representatives are now scheduled to return to Washington on January 8th after extending their holiday recess an extra week. This is a great time for members of Congress to work and engage with constituents in the districts they represent. It is also the perfect time to hold public town halls and hear the concerns of their constituents live and in person.

The beginning of the 2018 legislative session opens with many urgent and high stakes issues Congress must address. Congress has yet to pass a full fiscal year budget, instead opting for short-term continuing resolutions and threatening government shutdowns. With an end date of March in sight, Congress must address a legislative fix for the repealed DACA program or else thousands of young Americans immigrants will face deportation. Long-term funding for CHIP and Community Health Centers also needs immediate attention; the stopgap funding for these programs also expires in March. And not a week goes by where we don’t learn something new and concerning about the Trump campaign’s relationship with the Russian government.

Your representatives work for you: you should have regular opportunities to discuss their positions, the platforms of their parties, and how their legislative agendas will affect you and those close to you. Town halls are a critical tool for holding representatives accountable for their actions and ensuring that these men and women, who spend much of their time outside of their home states, are hearing the needs and concerns of their constituents in person.
