Oppose Jeffrey Bossert Clark for Top Environmental Prosecutor
Jeffrey Bossert Clark has been nominated for Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice (DOJ) Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD). If confirmed by the Senate, Clark would lead the DOJ's enforcement of environmental laws and regulations and defend the Environmental Protection Agency against challenges over industrial regulation. As we have come to expect from Trump appointees, Clark has a long history of opposing environmental protections, prioritizing corporate interests over the environment, and attacking the government agencies he's charged with leading and protecting. Clark is a climate change denier who has publicly condemned government regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. He helped lead industry challenges to the EPA’s “endangerment finding,” the conclusion that carbon emissions endanger public welfare that provided the scientific justification for government regulation of greenhouse gases. Clark's track record of opposition to environmental regulation extends beyond climate issues; Clark represented BP in lawsuits over the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2011 (the largest marine oil spill in history). He worked with BP to contest the U.S. government’s requests for documents about the spill and to push back against Louisiana parishes' settlement claims. Clark's career of fighting environmental protections and his history of opposition to common sense environmental regulation demonstrate that he can’t be trusted to enforce and protect the DOJ’s environmental laws. The Senate must oppose his nomination. "
