Oppose Regressive Taxation to Benefit the Wealthy in Missouri

H.J.R.s 173 & 174 would replace Missouri’s income tax with a vastly expanded sales tax on goods and services. Experts project this would increase total taxes for 60-80% of Missourians, disproportionately hitting middle and lower-income families and seniors as well as veterans. The measure does not define which services would be subject to the sales tax, meaning all services – including rent, health care, and mortgages – could be subject to the tax.

Missouri currently collects about $9 billion in individual income taxes, which makes up nearly two thirds of the state’s budget. The sales taxes needed to replace those funds would impact lowest-income residents and force state and local governments to cut programs or raise taxes themselves.

Missouri already faces a multi-billion dollar budget deficit resulting from previous tax cuts.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].

I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose H.J.R. 173 and 174. This proposal threatens the funding of schools and local services while forcing middle- and low-income families to pay more of their income to help the wealthy pay less.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
