S.B. 1085 “prohibits public school staff members from encouraging minor students in their social transition,” defined as engaging in certain activities with the goal of helping a student become perceived as a member of the opposite biological sex. Further, this bill requires school staff to report students who wish to change their name or pronouns to the school principal or their designee within 24 hours; the principal would then be required to report this information to the student’s parents within 72 hours of the student’s initial request.
This legislation endangers Missouri youth. Some students are not ready to be out to their families, and if they are forced and face rejection it may increase their odds of suicide and substance misuse.
Not only does this bill fail to consider the safety of children who may be neglected or abused if their gender identity is discovered by their parents, it also requires that educators be fired and their teaching license suspended or revoked if they are found to have knowingly violated any provision of this act.
Call your representatives and demand they oppose S.B. 1085. Our students and teachers deserve our support.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose S.B. 1085. This bill fails to consider the safety of our students and requires our educators to participate in actions that not only distract from the important work they do, but may in fact infringe upon their senses of morality.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
