North Carolina Republicans are considering another blatantly partisan attempt at gerrymandering the state’s congressional districts. States typically draw their congressional district maps once every decade, after a US Census. Now, Republican-led states are redistricting to fulfill Donald Trump’s desire to ensure Republican control of the House of Representatives after the 2026 elections. Instead of passing an overdue budget, the General Assembly is focused on gerrymandering, which an overwhelming, bipartisan majority of North Carolinians oppose. Republican legislators are trying for the second time since 2020 to unseat Representative Don Davis, who represents most of Eastern North Carolina.
Unfair maps disenfranchise voters and lead to long-lasting political problems. Drawing districts to strongly favor one party leads to severe polarization, legislative gridlock, and a weaker Congress. Congress can act by banning mid-decade redistricting (a move with some bipartisan support) and mandating independent, non-partisan redistricting commissions in every state (historically supported by Democrats). However, legislative action to stop partisan gerrymandering is unlikely before midterms, making state-level advocacy critical.
The NCGA’s gerrymandering attempts cheapen the political power of North Carolinians and all Americans. Demand that your state senators and representatives oppose any redistricting bills. Consider also leaving a public comment opposing redistricting at this General Assembly site before Monday, October 20.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose attempts to redraw North Carolina’s congressional district maps before the 2026 midterms. This blatantly partisan redistricting process would set a dangerous political precedent and rob North Carolinians of their rights. North Carolinians on both sides of the aisle agree that voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
