A Republican-backed plan in the North Carolina legislature would deeply violate the privacy rights of voters. Among other changes, H.B. 958 would require voters to enter their full Social Security numbers on registration forms.
As part of a broader Republican attempt to hamper voting rights, the Social Security number requirement would violate federal law, intimidate voters concerned about privacy, and compromise the security of this sensitive voter information. The bill also includes restrictions based on Jefferson Griffin’s failed attempt to overturn the 2024 State Supreme Court election results, including additional restrictions on military voters and the disenfranchisement of some children of members of the military or foreign service. Additionally, it would ban ranked-choice voting and permit the state to set up an AI-based signature-matching program that could invalidate legitimate votes.
North Carolinians deserve the right to vote for their candidates of choice without compromising their privacy. Demand that your state senators and representatives oppose H.B. 958 and any other attempts at voter suppression.
