Democratic members of the Texas House have broken quorum and left the state to block Republicans’ unprecedented attempt to gerrymander Congressional districts. Quorum-breaking has a history in Texas that dates back to at least 1870.
Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott are using untested legal methods and unwarranted FBI threats to try and force the quorum-breaking Democrats back to Texas. Abbott has sued to have Texas House Democratic Chair Gene Wu removed from office. Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is trying to make Texas arrest warrants enforceable in other states and threatened to sue to remove quorum-breakers from the legislature. Legal experts say the suits are unfounded and unconstitutional. No Texas legislator has ever been removed for breaking quorum. Abbott and Paxton are pursuing their strategy anyway, at Texas taxpayers’ expense.
Democrats are using a time-honored strategy to block an anti-democratic process, and Governor Abbott is responding with baseless lawsuits. Call him now to demand that he withdraw the suits and stop wasting time and tax dollars.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to demand that [REP/SEN NAME] drop his unfounded lawsuits against the quorum-breaking Democrats and abandon his attempts at gerrymandering our districts. Flood relief should be the governor’s top priority.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
