Abortion is illegal in Texas, where the laws and limited exceptions are among the most severe in the country. The Texas legislature is currently in a special session to pass bills focused on flood relief and other topics. Rather than immediately pass bills to support victims of the July 4 floods, Texas Republicans are instead prioritizing bills that further criminalize abortion.
These bills include HB 37, which would subject distributors of abortion pills to civil lawsuits, continuing Texas’ use of vigilante-style civil enforcement to restrict reproductive rights. HB 70 would criminalize supporting minors in travelling to other states to receive abortions, which they may need to do even in life-threatening situations, since Texas’ exception for emergencies is so unclear, and providers can be penalized with up to 99 years of imprisonment if they get it wrong.
Since the abortion ban, pregnant people in Texas have been dying more and experiencing higher rates of near-fatal bleeds and sepsis. Call your state senators and representatives and demand they stop these attacks on healthcare and abortion rights.
