Protect Trans Texans' Safety and Dignity - Passed House (UPDATED 8/29)

Updates

August 29, 2025: The bill banning transgender people’s use of bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity, S.B. 8, has been passed by the Texas House. Due to changes in the bill, the legislation will now be sent back to the Senate for final passage.

August 15, 2025: The first special session has ended, but Governor Abbott has immediately called a second special session.

Trans rights in Texas are under attack. The Texas legislature is currently in a special session to pass bills allegedly focused on flood relief. Rather than immediately pass bills to support victims of the July 4 floods, the legislature is prioritizing anti-trans “bathroom” bills.

Texas’s legislature filed more anti-trans bills in this year’s regular session than any other state government, but more than 90% of them did not pass. Now Texas Republicans are pushing bills, such as S.B. 8, that would penalize facilities that allow trans people to use bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. The bills would also prevent trans women from accessing domestic violence shelters and force trans incarcerated people into jails and prisons that do not match their gender identity, exposing an already threatened group to more violence.

The legislature needs to stop using trans people as a bargaining chip and focus on flood relief. Demand that your state senators and representatives oppose any other bills targeting trans people and bodily autonomy. Learn more from the Transgender Education Network of Texas.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].

I’m calling to ask that [REP/SEN NAME] oppose S.B. 8 and any other bills targeting transgender people and their bodily autonomy. Texas needs flood relief, not attacks on a small minority for a nonexistent problem.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
