April 29, 2025: Late on the evening of Friday, April 25th, the AmeriCorps agency unexpectedly and immediately terminated nearly $400 million in grant funding. This termination shuttered more than 1,000 programs and ended the service of over 32,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers. Programs in all 50 states, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands received termination notices effective immediately. The following Tuesday, two dozen states filed a collective lawsuit asserting that these program cuts are illegal.
On April 16, Elon Musk’s DOGE moved to illegally dismantle Americorps’ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), an independent federal agency created by Congress. This program deploys 2000 young volunteers for 10-month service terms to provide relief in communities devastated by natural disasters, such as tornadoes, floods, and most recently Hurricane Helene and the LA wildfires. These volunteers also work with local organizations including community and faith-based based groups, nonprofits, schools, cities, and tribes on projects related to education, housing, urban and rural development, land conservation, and disaster relief around the country. The majority of the agency’s personnel have been placed on administrative leave, while these young volunteers were suddenly dismissed without notice.
The NCCC provides critical support for disaster relief and underserved communities. Its closure will harm the Americans who are in the greatest need, whose homes, livelihoods, and health have already been subjected to harm and risk by DOGE’s unlawful actions. It’s critical we demand the restoration of staff and funding to this vital agency of deeply humanitarian workers.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] support legislation to restore funding and staff for AmeriCorps programs. Cuts to their vital disaster relief and community-building work harms Americans whose homes, livelihoods, and health have already been subjected to harm. It is critical we allow this agency’s lifesaving work to resume immediately.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
