After the devastating 2008 financial crisis, Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an independent agency that enforces consumer protection laws and protects people from financial companies engaged in unfair, deceptive, and abusive practices. Since its creation, the CFPB has obtained over $21 billion from lawbreaking corporations for over 205 million people and fielded over ten million complaints from consumers, service members, students, and victims of scams. The Bureau’s work has broad bipartisan support.
Despite CFPB’s impact and popularity, the Trump administration and the billionaires that CFPB typically holds accountable are now targeting it. Elon Musk and his DOGE team have demanded access to the CFPB’s data systems, which contain closely-guarded consumer and banking information. CFPB Acting Director (and Project 2025 co-author) Russell Vought has also issued several directives to immediately cease agency operations. Vought also notified the Federal Reserve that he would be stopping the CFPB’s funding stream.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, co-creator of the CFPB, decried Vought’s actions as “giving big banks and giant corporations the green light to scam families.” Without the CFPB’s work, Americans will suffer devastating harm from financial predators. While lawsuits have been filed to block DOGE’s access to the Bureau and challenge Vought’s attempts to halt work, CFPB’s continued existence is ultimately Congress’s responsibility. Demand that your representatives step up now to forcefully support and defend CFPB and its necessary work.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to demand that [REP/SEN NAME] vocally support the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and protect it from being unlawfully dismantled by the Trump administration. The CFPB does vital work to protect consumers like me from being scammed by predators. A block to its funding is both illegal and also puts me at direct risk for financial harm.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
