Protect the Department of Education: Trump EO Signed

Updates

March 20, 2025: Trump has signed an executive order to dismantle and eliminate the Department of Education. While the Trump Administration will attempt to scale back and eliminate programs, causing irreparable harm, it will take an Act of Congress to officially eliminate the department.

March 13, 2025: In her first move as Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon has fired half of the staff at the Department of Education, gutting entire divisions such as the Office for Civil Rights. The cuts will hobble the agency’s ability of provide educational support to school districts throughout the country.

The Trump administration is working to fulfill a campaign promise to abolish the Department of Education. Details are being finalized for an executive order that will have a two-part strategy to dismantle the agency. First, it will use executive authority to scale back the department’s functionality and workforce. Second, it will call for a legislative plan to redistribute the department’s power to other agencies until the department is ultimately shuttered. House Republicans have also reintroduced H.R. 899, a one-line bill to eliminate the Department of Education.

These changes would slash federal funding for public schools, eliminate support for students with disabilities, end enforcement of civil rights protections in education, and abolish federal student loan and workforce development programs. This is a direct attack on students, teachers, and families—one that only benefits right-wing extremists who seek to privatize education. Tell your House Representative to protect the Department of Education and oppose H.R. 899.
