July 10, 2025: CNN has reported that a 3-day delay in the deployment of FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue teams was the direct result of a new cost-cutting rule issued by Noem that requires her personal approval of pricier contracts. Noem has maintained that FEMA should be eliminated and that states should fund disaster relief themselves.
June 30, 2025: A ProPublica investigation has revealed that Noem seemingly took an $80,000 cut of campaign donations for herself, then failed to publicly disclose this income in an apparent violation of federal ethics requirements.
Kristi Noem’s tenure as the 8th Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been characterized by general gross incompetence which puts our communities in jeopardy. Noem has little prior experience with national security, making her an unfit choice from the start, and her recent incorrect definition of habeas corpus as “a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country” displays an alarming lack of crucial basic knowledge of due process and constitutional law. Under her leadership, DHS has targeted and detained verified US citizens, in some cases deporting them without due process.
Most recently, Noem’s security team forcibly removed, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) at her press conference in Los Angeles. She then stated that federal authorities would remain in LA for an indefinite amount of time to “liberate the city,” continuing the Trump administration’s dangerous escalation of authoritarian control. Noem’s request for the Department of Defense to deploy US troops to quell and arrest Los Angeles protestors also blatantly ignores the right to free speech and assembly and escalates violence, as does her ominous promise to use the sweeping immigration raids in Los Angeles as “a model and a blueprint” for sweeps of other communities.
Kristi Noem has displayed an abject lack of experience and knowledge in her tenure, guided by little but ignorance, cruelty, and blind Trump fealty. Demand your elected officials call for her resignation as DHS Secretary.
