UPDATE(01/29/25 2:00pm ET): The White House press secretary has issued a statement that the funding freeze is still on. It is unclear what the current state of federal funding is, keep up the pressure on your reps!
UPDATE(01/29/25 1:30pm ET): Acting director Vaeth has rescinded the funding freeze memo.
UPDATE (01/28/25): A federal judge has temporarily blocked Trump’s funding freeze until Monday, February 3rd. During this brief pause demand your members of Congress immediately put a check on this overreach of executive power.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is a crucial federal agency tasked with oversight and administration of the federal budget. In a blatantly unconstitutional power grab, Donald Trump’s acting OMB chief Matthew Vaeth has issued a memo directing government agencies to pause their financial assistance programs, including both disbursements of funds under existing grants and issuance of new awards, while OMB reviews the implications of Trump’s flurry of executive orders on these programs.
The funding freeze could have devastating effects on the hundreds of programs that receive some degree of federal funding, including school meals for children, USAID foreign assistance, and wildfire preparedness, and has left organizations scrambling to understand what comes next. The OMB order is not only disruptive and senseless but also a grossly unconstitutional overreach of presidential powers.
Trump and his lackeys’ interference with congressionally-approved funding directly contravenes the power of the purse delegated to Congress by the US Constitution. A coalition of State Attorneys General, led by NY State AG Letitia James, are planning to challenge the memo in court immediately, but Congress must also vocally assert their constitutional authority, reject Trump’s power grab, and demand immediate release of these essential federal funds.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] immediately support a resolution opposing Trump’s freeze on congressionally-approved federal funding. Even though the OMB has rescinded their federal funding freeze memo, the Trump White House states that this order is still in effect. Executive branch interference with this funding not only creates massive economic harms but also directly violates the Constitution. Congress must be united in opposing this blatantly unconstitutional action.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
