What began as a bipartisan effort to curb stock trading by members of Congress has now taken a partisan turn after House Republicans bundled a supposed stock-trading ban with an unrelated voter ID bill.
H.R. 7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act, would restrict members of Congress, their spouses, and their children from purchasing new individual stocks while in office. However, it falls short of other proposed legislation that requires elected officials divest from all stock holdings while in office. This bill fails to ban congressional insider trading outright, and it does not address potential insider trading by the VP and President. Now, in their latest attempt to pass portions of Trump’s SAVE America Act, House Republicans have amended H.R. 7008 to include H.R. 9368, the Voter ID Act, a bill that mirrors the restrictive voter ID provisions from the SAVE Act.
This partisan legislation uses the guise of much-needed ethics reform to sneak through an unpopular and unrelated attack on voting rights. Tell your representative to oppose H.R. 7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act, and demand a stronger ban on congressional stock trading.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose H.R. 7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act. This bill is a weak attempt at banning congressional stock trading and includes restrictive voter ID language aimed at suppressing our voting rights.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
