April 29, 2026: The Florida House and Senate have both passed the new partisan congressional district map.
April 28, 2026: A special legislative session for redistricting is set for April 28 to May 1. Lawmakers are now debating a new congressional map that used partisan criteria, directly violating the Florida ban on partisan gerrymandering.
Florida is considering a blatantly partisan attempt at gerrymandering its congressional districts. States typically draw their congressional district maps once every decade after a US Census. Instead, Republican-led states, including Florida, may redistrict now, prompted by Donald Trump’s desire to maintain Republican control of the House of Representatives after the 2026 midterm elections. Florida’s Republican leadership is being especially hypocritical, as they were defending the current maps in the Florida Supreme Court earlier this year.
Unfair maps disenfranchise voters and lead to long-lasting political problems. Drawing the districts so that they strongly favor one party leads to severe polarization, legislative gridlock, and a weaker Congress. Congress can act by banning mid-decade redistricting (a move with some bipartisan support) and mandating independent, non-partisan redistricting commissions in every state (historically supported by Democrats). However, no legislative action to stop partisan gerrymandering is likely before the 2026 midterms, making advocacy at the state level critical.
Spurred on by Trump’s demands, these mid-decade redistricting attempts are cheapening the political power of Floridians and all Americans. Demand that your state senators and representatives oppose any redistricting bills.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to ask that [REP/SEN NAME] oppose the new congressional district map proposed by Governor DeSantis. This blatantly partisan map violates the state’s ban on partisan gerrymandering and robs voters of their rights. Voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
