Oppose Broad New Restrictions on Demonstrations in Georgia

Georgia’s H.B. 1076 would make it a felony offense for individuals who use a motor vehicle to knowingly obstruct, hinder, block, or otherwise interfere with law enforcement officers discharging their official duties. The broad language in the bill leaves ambiguity as to what type of conduct could be targeted, much of which is already criminalized under Georgia law.

The bill also establishes imprisonment anywhere from one to five years and a fine up to $100,000, which is excessive compared to similar crimes.

The focus on motor vehicles is particularly relevant given ICE’s increased surveillance of immigrant and minority communities. This bill appears to be a direct response to the recent Minneapolis protests challenging ICE violence and is particularly abhorrent considering the shooting of Renee Good in her vehicle by an ICE agent.

Demand your representative reject this unnecessary and excessive legislation.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].

I’m calling today to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose H.B. 1076. This bill would criminalize drivers who are victims of ICE and is a heinous response to the murder of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
