In 2025, at Trump’s urging, Texas Republicans gerrymandered its Congressional map in order to gain an advantage that could flip up to five seats in the House of Representatives. In response, California Democrats pushed an emergency redistricting effort to counter the new map in Texas and pick up five new seats of their own. Now, 10 states in total have implemented new congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms, with Republicans poised to win as many as 16 new seats or, with Democrats projected to win up to six seats, a net gain of 10.
Maryland’s legislature is scheduled to meet for a special session from August 3 to August 5 to consider a constitutional amendment that could clear the way for another round of redistricting. If passed by a three-fifths vote, the amendment would appear on the ballot in November’s general election.
Maryland lawmakers have pointed to an April Supreme Court ruling that effectively eliminated Section 2 of the federal Voting Rights Act, clearing the way for several Republican-led states to redraw maps, as part of the impetus for this special session.
Unlike Texas or California, Maryland voters won’t decide on a new map directly but will determine whether the legislature can draw one later. This makes the August 3-5 session the first and most urgent step. Call your state representatives and urge them to vote ‘yes’ on the amendment.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I am calling to ask [REP/SEN NAME] to support efforts to amend the State Constitution and establish redistricting standards. The Legislature must act now to place this issue on the ballot so the people of Maryland can decide if the congressional map should be redrawn before the 2028 elections.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
