Sept 24, 2025: After Jimmy Kimmel’s show resumed Tuesday night, Trump once again threatened legal action against the network, citing his previous extortion of ABC News. Educators and journalists who have been fired for their social media posts have also filed lawsuits over First Amendment violations. Defense Secretary Hegseth also threatened to revoke access to journalists who report information without Pentagon approval, even if it’s unclassified.
Despite Trump signing an executive order “restoring freedom of speech” on Day 1 of his term, his administration has repeatedly taken action to silence the speech of anyone who politically opposes them.

The FCC threatened ABC affiliate licenses over Jimmy Kimmel’s criticism of MAGA, pressuring ABC to pull his show off the air. Government “jawboning” of private companies to silence speech is a violation of the First Amendment.

CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert’s show days after parent company Paramount settled a lawsuit with Trump; Trump cheered the announcement.
