Support the Housing for the 21st Century Act

On March 21st, by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 89-10, the Senate passed H.R. 6644, the Housing for the 21st Century Act. This landmark, comprehensive housing bill, spearheaded by Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Tim Scott (R-SC) aims to tackle the housing affordability crisis across the country by boosting new housing construction, lowering costs, and banning private equity companies from purchasing more than 350 homes.

The House similarly passed this bill by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in February, but because the Senate added a number of provisions to the bill, most notably the limitation on institutional investors’ purchase of single-family homes, the House must now pass the Senate’s amended version. But passage in the House is now uncertain. Trump announced his support for this bill, including its ban on widespread Wall Street purchases, but he has since walked back his support, demanding that House Republicans prioritize passing the SAVE America Act because “no one gives a (bleep) about housing.”

The Housing for the 21st Century Act is the largest piece of housing affordability legislation in 30 years, finally addressing the crisis that has been hurting families and communities for too long. It is imperative that Congress puts politics aside and pass this bill.
