On August 7th, Trump selected Stephen Miran, the chair of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors, to serve on the Federal Reserve Board. Miran was nominated to replace Adriana Kugler, who unexpectedly resigned the previous week, and will complete her term until it expires in January 2026. Miran notably told the Senate Banking Committee that he will remain in his position at the White House while serving on the Federal Reserve Board, raising fears that Miran will disrupt the independence of the country’s central bank and intentionally sway its policy decisions on Trump’s behalf.
Trump has repeatedly pressured Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for not drastically lowering interest rates, and he attempted to fire governor Lisa Cook. (A federal judge has temporarily blocked her firing). Miran has also widely criticized the Fed, including the stimulus actions taken during the peak of the covid pandemic, and he has long questioned the need for it to remain independent.
The Federal Reserve Board is set to meet on September 16-17th to discuss interest rate changes, the crucial policy decision Trump has been trying to influence. The Senate Banking Committee rushed through Miran’s nomination in order to tee up a full Senate vote on Monday Sept 15th, in time for Miran to be present for this meeting. Call your Senators and demand they oppose Miran’s confirmation to protect the Federal Reserve’s independence.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose the nomination of Stephen Miran for the Federal Reserve Board. Allowing a White House advisor to serve on the board will disrupt its independence and put the stability of our already shaky economy at greater risk.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
