Oppose UAE Funding of Atrocities in Sudan

In late October, el-Fasher, the last city in the southwest of Sudan not controlled by the terrorist group the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), fell to the paramilitary regime. Since the civil war between the RSF and the Sudanese Army began in April 2023, more than “150,000 people have died in the conflict across the country, and about 12 million have fled their homes in what the United Nations has called the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.” Following over two years of terror, starvation, sexual assault, and numerous other atrocities, countless innocent civilians were beaten and killed as they tried to flee el-Fasher.

While both the UN and the Biden administration deemed the RSF war crimes and targeting of non-Arab ethnic groups a genocide, little public attention has been paid to the fact that the RSF has been largely funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Sudanese Army has accused the UAE of funding the RSF and carrying out drone strikes in Sudan, and Sudan’s government filed a case against the UAE in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for their complicity. Although the UAE denies these allegations, UN experts claim that the allegations of the UAE funding for the RSF are credible. In January, the US imposed sanctions on the leader of the RSF for committing acts of genocide and war crimes, and later sanctioned the head of Sudan’s army following reports of the Sudanese Army killing civilians. However, the Trump administration has been unable to broker a ceasefire, and many officials have been unwilling to criticize the UAE’s role.

The United States must take action to end this crisis and hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable. Demand that your representatives speak out against the genocide in Sudan and the UAE’s complicity.
