Every two years, immediately following the November general elections, Democrats and Republicans in both the House and Senate begin the process of choosing their party leaders for the upcoming session of Congress that starts in January. At this time, Representatives and Senators nominate and elect their party leaders, including Speaker of the House, senate majority and minority leaders, whips, and chairs.
Majority leadership shapes almost everything that Congress does, from what bills get a vote, to which committees they’re sent to, and when they come to the floor. Leaders also work to persuade lawmakers to align with the party, and help decide who chairs the committees that write bills and run oversight and investigations.
Because this will determine what Congress prioritizes for the next two years, every member in both the majority and minority parties should elect leaders who reflect the values of their constituents and the mandate just handed to them by voters. Call your representative and tell them what’s most important to you and what you expect them to fight for.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to ask [REP/SEN NAME] to elect party leaders who will represent the values of constituents like me. Voters have issued a mandate for oversight and accountability and expect Congress to meet these needs.
[OPTIONAL: Mention specific issues you’d like addressed and/or names of members you’d like to see in leadership]
Thank you for your time and consideration.
